A melancholy love story that begins with a young boy and his dog; an intimate father-son moment reviewing the stars; a young man's disillusionment with the tarnished memory of young love; a decades-long grieving over loss in the Vietnam War.

These are just a few of the stories waiting to be found in TINKER.

They're stories about ordinary people that touch on everyday things like life and love, loneliness, desperation and despair.

Some of them shine a light on dim places we often choose not to talk about: societal illnesses like hatred, bigotry, despondency and war, and a few may speak of truly dark things.

But they also touch gently on the bright, soft things of life; the subtle butterfly wings of love and hope that, even in the midst of depair, occasionally tickle our minds and hearts.

Herron is a true storyteller who weaves stories together about everyday life and makes them fascinating.

Tinker and Other Short Stories by R.L. Herron is a deeply moving collection of nineteen stories. Each one evokes different emotions ranging from sadness to anger to laughter. Herron has the gift of weaving stories together about everyday life and making them fascinating. The stories are anywhere from one page to several pages and well-written. He drops the reader into a moment in time of each character’s life, makes each one connect and ends most stories with a quote linking it to the world. I stopped after each story and reflected on every quote, the impact of the stories and how Herron has the ability to engage the reader in a short amount of time.

Some of the highlights for me were the story about “Hazel,” an elderly woman, and her kindness to someone with an unexpected outcome. “The Gifts” which made me pause and reflect on how busy our lives are and how important it is to keep in touch with people we love by making time for them. “Angel” was another one about an old man sitting in a park and how the kindness of a stranger touched his life. Not all of the stories were about kindness and reflection. Some were about hard or sad lives and angry emotions. “The Catch” was about two angry brothers and their life and death conflict. “Tinker” was a poignant love story about a husband’s perspective on life and his dying wife. Herron has no problem writing about how hard life can be. He writes stories about humanity in a remarkable way and remains one of my favourite authors. I highly recommend reading this collection written by a true storyteller.
